
Gary Hocevar, President of the Bay
Area Charter Leadership Council
Gary Hocevar’s education and political careers span over three
decades of public service. As a long time public school
administrator, Gary has served as a site based principal, region
administrator and as a mentor for new and aspiring site based
administrators. With many years of involvement in local, state and
national politics Gary held various leadership positions including
being a member of the House of Representative, New Mexico.
With advanced degrees, Gary Hocevar focused his academic training in
the fields of law, political science, educational administration,
business and government.
During his years of service in education, many of his schools
received a wide variety of local, state and national awards and
recognitions. He states that one of his most treasured
accomplishments was “earning the National Blue Ribbon School of
Excellence Award in 1993 for an inner city – high impact school”.
This recognition to that school community changed attitudes and
opinions of many toward the reform movement in education. In that
same year, Mr. Hocevar was honored as an Outstanding Secondary
Public School Principal by the U.S. Department of Education.
For some years, Representative Hocevar, D, Bernalillo-NM, served the
citizens of State House District 29, New Mexico. Representative
Hocevar (Ret.) also was the spokesperson for the National Education
Reform Network (representing principals) in addressing the joint
U.S. House-Senate Committee testifying and lobbying for systemic
changes in public education throughout the country. During his
political career, Gary lobbied for and obtained millions of dollars
in new funding for education, local community capital projects as
well as sponsoring key legislation involving major education and
human rights issues.
Throughout his career, Gary Hocevar has provided leadership to many
organizations which support children, the elderly and community
associations. In early 1990, Gary was also recognized as one of New
Mexico’s “Movers and Shakers” by the New Mexico Business Journal for
his legislative and education impact on the state.
A father of two adult children and grandfather of two, Gary Hocevar,
along with his long time domestic partner, divides his time between
family, his love of blue water sailing, his current duties as
principal of Terrace Community Middle School and local and national
consulting.
